Most of the Diploma holders in Engineering want to upgrade to a degree in Engineering. This article may come as a guidance to those students. Upgrading to a degree certainly has many advantages not only at start of the career but also in future promotions and wider choices of companies as some companies set the minimum qualification criteria as a degree in engineering.

The Diploma holders get admitted to the second year (III Sem.) of the engineering degree course, where 20% of the sanctioned intake in every division are available for such lateral entry. Moreover, since last two years, AICTE (All India Council of Technical Education), a body granting approval to engineering and technology institutions, have allowed certain engineering degree colleges to start a separate division exclusively for Diploma students, wanting to enter into the second year of engineering degree program.

The students seeking transition from Diploma to Degree in Engineering should satisfy certain criteria. The minimum eligibility percentage has been fixed at 50% in Diploma for to be considered in admission to second year engineering degree. Every engineering degree college has a different cutoff percentage, the information about which may be collected from respective college only. Also, the branch a student may opt must be the same or its sub-group. For example, a student having Diploma in Mechanical Engineering can’t seek admission in Electrical or Computer engineering, but the branches open for such students may be Mechanical or its allied branches like Automobile, Production etc. Some universities may require to clear Maths I and Maths II paper in the entry semester in addition to the regular subjects. Since those Math subjects are way different and at higher level than the diploma, must have to be studied thoroughly.
