IIT may discontinue online counselling from 2013 After the two cases of impersonation in JEE 2012 were detected for securing admissions to IIT Bhuvaneshwar and ISM Dhanbad this year, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) has been proposing to discontinue the practice of online counselling from 2013, which it had been following for several years. With the withdrawal of the online counselling the candidates will have to appear personally at the respective IIT where he/she is seeking the admission from 2013.

In the first case of impersonation at the spot admission, a girl was caught by the admission officials at ISM Dhanbad with the other candidate’s scores, and doctored photographs; but the alert official smelling the fraud while comparing the likeness of the photograph available with the office with that of the candidate, had detected the impersonation from her thumbprints. In the second case, a boy was caught on the similar lines while seeking admission to IIT-Bhuvaneshwar.

Each year more than five lakh candidates take the test to qualify for around 10,000 seats in the 15 IITs, Banaras Hindu University (BHU) and Indian School of Mines in Dhanbad (ISM Dhanbad). IIT administrators say that a few aspirants occasionally try fraudulent means.

“Online counselling is one of the factors facilitating such incidents. Students will only be allowed to fill the options online, and will have physical counselling at the seven IITs,” said H C Gupta, organising chairman of 2013 JEE (Advanced), TOI reports.
