CBSE To Introduce Course in Gender Studies in Class XI Next Academic Session The CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) has announced that a new subject “Human Rights and Gender Studies” will be introduced in Class XI from the ensuing academic session (2013-14).

The elective course to be introduced as pilot in 50 schools initially, is aimed to create awareness about gender sensitivity and gender issues. The announcement came in the backdrop of “Women’s Day”. The subject is about how gender is learnt, the implications of gender for our lives, and prospects for change insofar as men and women are able to combine and/or reject elements of traditional masculinity and femininity.

“Teaching gender also involves the potentials and problems of gender being a universal individual experience, personal or social in the institutional setting and focuses on gender mainstreaming in the light of human rights,” said Training and Academic Director of CBSE, Sadhana Parashar, while justifying the need of introduction of such course in Class XI that time in life for students when they are made to start reflecting over their future life and decide of a career.

Welcoming the announcement, a school principal expressed that the course would give reasons to the boys why should they respect girls and realize that there would not have been life on earth without female species.
