Kapil Sibal on Monday 28th May 2012 declared implementation of Joint Entrance Exam (JEE), for admission to Engineering courses conducted in IITs and NITs from 2013, with due weightage to be given to Class XII board exams. However, the decision does not seem to have gone well with IIT council.

The first concern is on the inclusion of board exam marks in the final rankings. IITs expressed doubts over how the CBSE grades would be compared with the ranks obtained by the students from other boards. Secondly, IITs have expressed concern over Govt. meddling with their autonomy by having new JEE as the only entrance exam, common for all Engineering and Technology institutes.

Minister however tried to convince the IITs saying, the CBSE grades will be converted into percentile scores using an appropriate formula developed by the Indian Statistical Institute. Talking about the autonomy in conducting tests, The Joint Admission Board (JAB) of the IITs are vested with the complete authority on matters regarding the setting of question papers, evaluation and merit lists.

The students will first have to appear for the JEE main, the marks of which will be clubbed with the Class XII marks on equal proportion. Only a few will be allowed to appear for the next level JEE Advanced after considering the resultant score obtained after clubbing of the marks.

Students must note that the number of candidates taking the JEE-Advanced will be five times more than the actual number of seats available. Students, who gave Class XII board in 2012, can reappear next year to improve their performance. The Central Board of Secondary Education will be providing administrative support to conduct the exams.

Though HRD ministry’s aim behind introducing the new format of JEE is to reduce the stress on students, many believe the format will only manifold the stress of students.

With many challenges to be met, the question is, are we ready for JEE 2013?
