In order to address the uncertainty faced by the student community, consequent to the resolution of the senates of IIT Kanpur and IIT Delhi, the ministry has decided to meet with IIT Council again on Wednesday, June 27 in the national capital.

IIT Delhi Thursday rejected the common entrance test and decided to hold its own entrance exam from 2013 on the same line with IIT Kanpur. “The entrance exam shall be conducted in association with IIT Kanpur,” said IIT Delhi while rejecting the proposal on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the Joint Admission Board (JAB) of the Indian Institutes of Technology will hold an emergency meeting on Saturday, June 23, in Delhi to discuss the admission process for 2013. The board has not yet met after May 28 when the Centre announced the JEE reforms to be implemented from 2013 when a common entrance test will be held for all centrally funded technology institutes, including the IITs.

The JAB meeting on June 23 assumes significance as it will precede the meeting of the council, the highest decision-making body, headed by HRD minister Kapil Sibal and including directors of all the 16 IITs. The council would discuss the situation created by the difference in view among the IITs by the Centre’s proposal and the future course of action to end uncertainty among students.

Though the pressure on the IITs to adopt the new JEE mounts with the Centre saying they will not go back on the council decision, IIT-Bombay’s senate is yet to meet to discuss the issue. The special senate meeting, earlier scheduled on June 27, has been postponed to the first week of July. In a mail sent by the faculty forum last Friday, only 65 out of more than 450 teachers on the campus have responded. The poor response is attributed to the vacation. The director is yet to confirm the date.
