1200 of the 17,464 shortlisted candidates stayed away from the online counseling for the admissions to the prestigious IITs, it was reported as the deadline for submitting the choice of course ended on June 10′ 2012. The reasons are attributed to the low rank in JEE, application to medical courses simultaneously or achievement of better score / rank in AIEEE which brings better possibility of getting the branch of choice.

Candidates were allowed to provide 215 course choices in the descending order of their preference. However some candidates were observed to be either careless or ignorant to the provision that if their rank does not qualify for any of the smaller number of choices they had given then they automatically loose the chance for counseling.

The online counselling process had three stages — registration, submission of photocopies of documents and choice-filling. If either of these is not met, the candidate loses his counselling chance.

There are as many as 9,647 seats in various IIT’s, including 4,722 in the general category.
