Self Defence To Be Included in School Curriculum Pursuant to the latest incidences of violence and sexual crime against women, the HRD Minister of State, Shashi Tharoor, declared in Rajya Sabha this Friday, that his ministry has issued directions to the State Governments to incorporate training in self defence.

“HRD Ministry has written education secretaries of states in January to suggest inclusion of training in self defence in physical education classes for girl students in upper primary level”, the Minister said.

Tharoor also informed that the University Grants Commission (UGC) has set up a task force to look into measures to provide safety to women. The UGC has taken essential steps with regard to laying emphasis on gender sensitisation and gender studies.

In a reply to a member’s query during question hour in Rajya Sabha, Tharoor said, “In order to promote women’s studies, UGC through special scheme, has created 158 Women’s Study Centres in the country of which 82 are in universities and 76 in colleges.”

Besides, CBSE affiliated schools would also have gender sensitisation course and as such gender concerns have been integrated in the curriculum and in the textbooks drawn up by the National Council of Education Research and Training (NCERT), Tharoor said.

CBSE has already decided to offer an elective course on “Human Rights and Gender Studies” for class XI and XII from 2013-14 academic year.
