TERI University Launches New Course MSc Climate Science and Policy In a landmark announcement made on 9th November, Friday, United Nations Educational, Scientific & Cultural Organization (UNESCO) officially launched the UNESCO Chair on “Climate Science and Policy” at The Energy and Resources Institute University (TERI University). The Chair aims at promoting knowledge dissemination, technology development, transfer, and information sharing on climate science and on related policy issues.

With the launch of the UNESCO Chair, the TERI University has announced to initiate a new course – MSc in climate science and policy.

Making the announcement, Rajiv Seth, registrar, TERI University, said that, The two-year program will boost research and provide a practical understanding of climate science. “There is worldwide acknowledgement of the changes in environment induced by man. In such a scenario, a program promoting an understanding of climate policy, integrating the industry with academics for sustainable business models, is the need of the hour. Through the program, students will get an understanding of the practical aspects of climate science,” he said. Areas that will be covered include geo-sciences, law and policy, mitigation, etc.

The two-year course is structured in semester pattern – In the first semester, students will be introduced to the basics. The second semester will have options for students to choose an area of specialisation in a multidisciplinary manner. The third semester will see students picking up electives, such as environment modelling, hydrology, water treatment, etc; and the final semester would be devoted to research and project work. A faculty member will guide students in their research for the industry-based project. They have to prepare a thesis at the end of the semester.

Initially the course will have 15 seats on offer. The fee for this particular course, per semester, is around Rs 50,000. V Ramanathan, director, Centre for Atmospheric Sciences, Scripps Institute of Oceanography, United States (US), will be heading the program, the announcement said.
