About 81 colleges in the area of technical and management studies have closed shop this year so far, with majority of them being MBA colleges, a report says. Out of these 81 colleges, 50 colleges are of management, 8 of engineering and rest in the other streams. Most of the colleges which closed belonged to the State of Andhra Pradesh. Last year also saw closure of 41 colleges.

The reason behind the closure is attributed to the tendency of the students to only prefer those colleges that have tie-ups with the industry to provide the practical training.

There are 11,000 technical colleges in the country, out of which 3700 are polytechnics, 3900 engineering and remaining 3800 management schools. AICTE has 315 pending requests for the opening of technical colleges, out of which are 174 are for opening the polytechnics.
